Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck
Complete Keyboard Works, Volume 4:
Variations on Songs and Dances

Sweelinck Clavierwerke IV

edited by Pieter Dirksen

Wiesbaden: Breitkopf & Härtel, 2004

102 pages

This is one of the two volumes of a new Sweelinck edition (the other being Volume I – Toccatas, ed. Harald Vogel) which Harald Vogel and I have been working on for quite some time. We follow the sources as closely as possible, making a clear editorial differentiation between works preserved principally in staff notation (which was Sweelinck’s notation) and those preserved solely in tablature notation (which was the principal notation of his German pupils). Thus vital information for the player such as brevis bars, irregular beaming and hand division (Lynar A1!) is made accessible for the first time. As a rule, only one primary source is used for each piece, the text of which is amended as little as possible. An extensive preface provides a short biography of Sweelinck, an introduction to his keyboard music, a discussion of the source situation, matters notation and editioral principles, an overview of the publication history, as well as, for each volume seperately, an introduction to the music contained in that particular volume.

Kritische Bemerkungen / Critical Notes

From the Reviews:

"Alles in allem scheint hier eine Edition zu entstehen, die in Bezug auf Sweelincks Werken für Tasteninstrumente wohl so etwas wie das letzte Wort sprechen wird."
(Gregor Willmes in Fono Forum)

" ... engrossing preface ... impressive knowledge of source material is at once evident here ... the edition ... throughout reflects impressive resources of scholarship, practical knowledge, and experience."
(Gerald Gifford in The Consort)

" ... ganz hervorragende Edition. ... Pieter Dirksen hat überzeugende Arbeit geleistet, das Notenbild ist erfreulich übersichtlich und so dürfte dieses Ausgabe bis auf Weiteres zum Mass aller Dinge in Sachen Sweelinck werden. Sehr empfehlenswert!"
("FS" in Musica Sacra)

The edition, and indeed each page layout, is the product of great care. ... The editing is very reliable ... the new edition deserves a prominent place amongst the more valuable products of our period.
(Peter Williams in The Organ Yearbook)
