99 pages

A critical edition of a publication made by the famous Amsterdam publisher Estienne Roger of twelve keyboard works: six suites, three variations sets and three fugues. He printed them without any composer’s names, but in an article of 1987 Harry Joelson-Strohbach identified half of its content through concordances as music by Georg Böhm, Johann Adam Reincken and Johann Pachelbel. In an extensive preface, the authorship question of the remaining anonymous pieces (notably five substantial suites) is discussed, which in addition to the composers mentioned above includes such figures as Dieterich Buxtehude, Christian Ritter and Johann Mattheson – in all a fascinating panorama of North German keyboard art! Closely connected with this is the provenance of Estienne Roger’s rather mysterious Druckvorlage. The content and its concordances shows that it has firm ties to both Hamburg and the Thuringian Bach-circle. Roger’s edition is not as trustworthy as it appears on first sight, and a thorough restoration of the note text was imperative.
